Reading a WSJ story by Dov Leiber entitled “Israel Set Out to Destroy Hamas and Free Hostages—but Worries It Can’t Do Both” and I couldn’t get past the first few paragraphs.
I was dismayed by his repeated use of “militants” to refer to those who murdered, raped, tortured, terrorized, maimed, and captured Israeli civilians on Oct 7. Those are terrorists. They terrorized.
Bloodless language like “militants” impedes understanding. I suspect that many people don’t fully grasp that what happened on Oct 7 was terrorism, and that it succeeded. The Israeli people are terrified, and that underlies many of their recent choices.
