I know why people do not switch to the Fediverse, or why they do not switch to secure messaging services, outside the reach of corporate and government oversight.
It is more convenient not to do so.
A lot of these free, open source developments, target geeks. Congratulation, if you're reading this, you likely have already put in more effort that it takes to sign up and use something else.
NO - Never - Get the idea out of your head, people will not give up convenience for better privacy. It is not in human nature and 30+ years of corporate and government oversight, should make that obvious. If it is not convenience, it does not matter how private and secure something is. Sorry, not sorry, those are just the facts. It is a hard pill to swallow, but swallow you must, so people can start focusing on making these many things, convenient.
I sometimes, although I cannot prove it, believe some of the developments behind better privacy and security, intentionally keep things hard, by design. That perhaps the FOSS world was infiltrated years ago, and that is why there has always been the pushback, on making things idiot-proof, graphically please, and simpler.
Mastodon and Misskey, for example, both use Activity Pub, but I should not need to copy and paste someone's username and manually search for them, to follow. It took years, for Mastodon, to make it easy for me to just stumble over a profile, and click a single button to follow.
If it is not simple, and easy, you're wasting everyone's time. Go code something else.

I know #Signal has been recommended as the main alternative to #Whatsapp for #GlobalSwitchDay, but given that it's centralised & tied to your phone number (and also won't let you migrate your chat history between platforms), I'd recommend #SimpleX as a worthy alternative without those downsides.

It seems that there is a campaign in the Netherlands to encourage people to move from WhatsApp to Signal (@signalapp).
And considering lots of my (fairly) old Dutch contacts still in my phone's contact list are now moving (I see a fair amount of "<user> is now on Signal" messages), it seems to be working!
Finally finished migrating my phone from #iOS to #android #GrapheneOS. Not all my friends and family are receptive to my warnings about using #Whatsapp but that turned out to be a blessing in disguise because even though it was a pain I could ultimately migrate my messages across. Absolutely zero chance of doing that with #Signal and a ton of very meaningful messages from dear friends are stuck on my old handset it seems. The clear winner was @simplex, by far the easiest migration of the lot.
I've seen a lot of people talking about leaving #WhatsApp. Great!
Only, don't replace one WhatsApp with another.
#Signal and #Threema are centralized services, and just as vulnerable to #enshittification as Twitter or WA.
Instead, use a platform that's standardized and federated - #XMPP, a.k.a. #Jabber.
The easiest way to use it is to install #Quicksy from the Play Store, App Store, or F-Droid.

I grew up with my aunties having to buy a calling card, find a call center, place a call with horrible connection. My parents had to yell to be heard and there was always a delay. Anyone who goes through my post history, knows I work for Meta (Facebook).
I am "Consumer Content Administrative Manager". My primary duties include content appeals, account appeals, account reviews, and some peer review.
It is no surprise that my job depends on people using Facebook. Today, I am going to suggest, you not do so. I can make that suggestion because we have a user base of billions, and I know most people would keep using Facebook even if the Devil ran the company. People are strange.
But if you feel you can truly live without Facebook, do so. Internally, things are changing, and not for the better. You should especially consider leaving Meta if you are a minority, woman, LGBTQ+, trans, or identify as progressive, politically. If facts matter to you, and misinformation is something you do not want to be subject toward, you should especially consider leaving, Facebook.
You have no privacy from Meta, while using Meta. None. I do not care if you believe you disabled a "feature" or "opt out" of something. You only seem to have done so. And even if you're going to continue to use Meta, uninstall the app (all of them). We collect data on you, even when you're not using the app.

Ich habe schon lange #Signal installiert. Auf dem iPhone tut es auch mittlerweile einigermaßen, wenn man #blind ist und es mit VoiceOver nutzt. Unter #Android muss man halt raten, wer den Text geschrieben hat. Die Info gibt #Talkback nämlich nicht aus. Das macht keinen Spaß! Wenn ich mir ohnehin merken muss, wer was geschrieben hat, dann brauche ich auch keine Chatverläufe und komme besser niemals in die Situation, irgendwas nachlesen zu müssen.
Gerade habe ich die Signal App auf Windows installiert. Chatverläufe werden nicht übertragen. Und einen neuen Chat anzufangen geht wegen der beschissenen Darstellung der Kontakte mit #JAWS zumindest nicht ansatzweise intuitiv.
Habe ich einen Chat offen, wird mir auch hier nur der Text der Nachrichten angezeigt und nicht, wer sie geschrieben hat.
Ich erinnere mich an Diskussionen sogar noch vor Corona, wo viele dieser Probleme schon zigfach geäußert wurden. Hat sich daran etwas geändert? Offenbar nicht oder zumindest nicht genug. Und nein! Ich werde nicht wieder unbezahlte Zeit in den hundertsten Bugreport mit den selben Inhalten stecken, die schon zigfach eingagangen sind!
Da kann #Meta noch so böse sein. So lange #Signal nicht genau so sinnvoll mit Screenreader auslesbar ist, ist es keine Alternative. Und da habe ich die Tastaturkürzel von WhatsApp auf dem Desktop noch gar nicht berücksichtigt.
Given Meta's new X's policy that allows for abuse and strips minorities of protection to embrace the fascism of MAGA, I'm gonna wind down those accounts.

Better-funded (but enshittification-prone) platforms (like #WhatsApp, #Telegram, #Discord, #Matrix, and #Bluesky) can swoop in, provide better marketing and faster development. A critical mass of people moves there.
Suddenly, you're socially pressured into using them. They become a necessity to find work, to organize communities, to buy and sell stuff, to apply for government programs...hell, to even book Metro tickets.
