This week's sky offers the last views of fast-fading Jupiter at dusk, but dawn brings Saturn, Mars, and the old Moon. The crumbs of Halley's Comet splatter across Earth's atmosphere on Saturday as the Eta Aquariid meteor shower peaks around dawn. Leo the Lion starts walking downward toward the west, on his way to departing into the sunset in early summer. Get out and see your sky!

This isn't your typical #unboxing #video! A few days ago the first segments of the huge 39-m mirror of ESO's Very Large #Telescope arrived in #Chile, and our engineers checked that they hadn't suffered any damage.

Each segment was shipped in its own box containing sensors that tracked the temperature, humidity and shocks throughout the entire 10 000 km journey from Europe.

The first 18 segments of the primary mirror of ESO's Extremely Large #Telescope have arrived safely to #Chile !

Our engineers at Paranal Observatory checked that they hadn't suffered any damage during their 10000 km trip from France.

The ELT's 39-m mirror will be comprised of 798 of these segments, working together as a gigantic eye on the sky.

SO got us a cool reflector telescope. I've only ever used kid-targeted refractors before so it's an adventure.

I'm gonna gripe that if your "beginners guide" uses the terms "Dec, or collimation" or any of a dozen other telescope specific terms without defining them, it's not a beginners guide!

The quick installation guide said things like "Attach to Dec screw" with no picture or further explanation. Gah!

It’s spooky season, and ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) got the memo for this Halloween-inspired Picture of the Week. A full moon rises up from behind Cerro Armazones, the ELT’s perch in the Chilean Atacama Desert, where construction of the monster telescope is underway.

In this image –– a throwback to a famous scene in E.T. –– we see the steel skeleton of the telescope dome eerily illuminated under the moonlight. It now stands at a towering 80 metres high; when completed, the whole structure will rotate 360 degrees to observe the night sky, all while weighing 6100 tonnes — about as heavy as 1 500 000 pumpkins.

This ghostly image was captured on 28 October 2023, from around 20 kilometres away close to the entrance to ESO’s Paranal Observatory. It’s not every day that the Moon is positioned so perfectly behind the mountaintop, so an event was carefully planned by the Paranal Photo Club to capture the moment. Not only does the Moon cycle through different phases — new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter — as it orbits around Earth every 27.3 days, but its position on the horizon and the time at which it rises change over time as well.

Finished my first week working for #Cosylab where our department is working on #astronomy and #space projects for #ESA (European Space Agency) and #ESO (European Southern #Observatory). We're using my favourite tools like C++, Qt and #Linux. Glad I persevered through technical difficulties to view today's #eclipse through my #telescope using a white light solar filter.

Had a really tough time photographing it through the eyepiece with my iPhone. My best shot is still somewhat out of focus, and also long past the maximum point of the eclipse, but you can still see some of the intriguingly-shaped #sunspots to the right of the #moon's limb.

A Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope with a solar filter is mounted on tripod in the side yard of a house. The scope is pointed to the right and behind the photographer, at the sun. In the background, a clear blue sky is visible behind a Silver Maple tree and above a neighboring house’s roof. Directly behind the telescope is a raised vegetable bed which provided a crop of lettuce, tomatoes, and tomatillos this season. It is covered with felt insulation for protection against the previous night’s freeze.
