The 3 covers of "Remnants," my book of haiku and senryu verse – paperback, Kindle & Kobo. Same image of a sandy coloured ruined stone wall at Kenilworth Abbey Fields, with trees and blue sky in the background. Same title and author name, Simon J Ashcroft – but different styles of lettering and layout. Total accident, that it turned out like this, but I rather like having the instant differentiation.

Patience in a nutshell:
I have none
And everything’s electric
Sizzling with ambition
Lost in seconds passing
Drags away my soul
Each breath a tiny whisper
Heaving life into the night
Scattered dreams a haunting
Train-wreck crashing through
My desiccated brainwaves
Superheated with emojis
Vapourware a hunted bunyip
Seeking hard the pathway forward
Shards of glass all flaming hot,
Yet beyond that hell a fountain

Diorama thoughts confuse
The endless madrigal singing,
Dampening with fear, unbounded
Ash and spattered blood endure
The ancient breath of tired earth,
Wreathing in all, oh, it’s so pointless,
Just another dickhead shrimp
On the barbie, sizzling hot amid
The searing brick-veneer landscape,
Drizzled in summered shouts of fun
Beneath the sprinkler, too old for that
Yet not too flabby to stop wanting

First, you feel secrets in the chest,
a kind of blood, a bright blooming,
a strange kind of thicket, ousting
the ribcage. I could let them go,
I am hungry enough. Prying
open each opening, fingers
twisting for a strange kind of switch.
I wrestle the blood out of me,
handfuls at a time and you look
at me exactly as if I
had blood on my hands, as if I
am guilty, denying myself
a woman. While I congratulate my truth:
No longer a sister. A them, they, their.
A not-usually-her and you’d
look at me bright with red and turn,
quick to not have blood touch your skin.'

In fright gaslit tech-today?
Whilst automated gazettes of cant
Strive to flash induce such seedy
Feed-fuelled falsehood frenzies?
Time to trip through the tribal tales:
Do you remember our guy Arthur?

Rocking that ancient concept -
Poetry to entertain you -
That tatty old matter clatters back
Onto the reboot track. Again.

Deploying all the poet-teqh,
Revoking all your lie-sense,
Let’s rap along the old country songs:
Tell yet another true tale of Arthur.
