Interpol - El Pintor
The time off did Interpol good, and they came roaring back, sans Carlos D, with a great album that finally embraced the changes they had been working towards. Daniel’s guitar work is far more varied here, and often daring to slllooowww down…
Alan Moulder does a nice job mixing, too (he did that on Interpol s/t as well).

R.E.M. - Up
This was a weird pivot for REM, post-Bill Berry, and they signpost it pretty heavily right out of the gate.
There’s always that tension between “what do the fans want” and “do we want to do”, and this tilts heavily towards the latter, with virtually no jangle, lots of keyboards, etc. (Nigel Godrich engineered nearly all tracks, which makes sense.)
Didn’t like it much on release, but with time and distance I appreciate it more.
Cloud Nothings - Final Summer
Let’s hope not.
Classic indie-style rock. Not entirely sure why it’s pressed at 45RPM, since it’s a pretty normal length, but if the beginning seems a little sludgy, you know why.
Psychedelic Furs - World Outside
The reset continued here, integrating a bit of the Forever Now sound into the noisier earlier sound…and cutting out the dance-rock completely.
But despite the good set of songs, the album was out of step with the times, wasn't successful, and there wouldn't be another for nearly 30 years.
Superchunk - Majesty Shredding
Gaps either end up draining the band (XTC, alas - don't even try arguing that Apple Venus & Wasp Star were worthy of their legacy) or reinvigorating them - as was the case here. The 9 years let them generate a bunch of solid, fun, tuneful songs…which they pound out with enthusiasm.
Plus, hey, a tube on the cover played through a tube phono preamp seemed...appropriate.

Born in 1962 in rural southwest NYS, studied computer science in college, worked 1984-2009 for a big company, came to #RTP NC in 1997. I've been doing more contracting work late and these days am deep into #Python, #Docker, #Ansible, #Packer, #Linux, #Jenkins, etc.
Outside work, I love music/concerts (#prog, #indierock, etc), some tv/movies, #cats, #kayaking (calm lakes), #puzzles.
