Dear Programming Interwebs, I am considering starting a New Thing that I would like to do in a "modern" compiled language, with strong cross-platform compatibility, good multi-threading support and interop with Python.
Should I learn C++ again? I have not used it in 24 years and, thus, am somewhat behind on recent developments…
I want to start writing a manual for my software. I should give an introduction of how the software works, how to feed it correct data and how to configure and run it. Suggestions on what markup language and what editor are very welcome. I would like to have outputs in PDF and Epub. BTW, RTL support is very important.
Two choices which come to mind are #LaTeX and #Markdown
Please boost it.

does anyone know who specifically wrote the "this place is not a place of honor" long-term nuclear waste warning message from "Expert judgment on markers to deter inadvertent human intrusion into the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant"? https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1279277/
it was in Appendix F, the Team A report, so presumably it was one or more of Dieter G. Ast, Michael Brill, Ward Goodenough, Maureen Kaplan, Frederick Newmeyer, and Woodruff Sullivan (the members of Team A), but the specific section doesn't have any specific attribution.
Looking for free ($0) alternatives to Wordpress/Tumblr/Medium/Substack I can recommend to *non-techy*, non-pro people.
What it should have:
- WYSIWYG web interface
- ability to upload photos and easily embed videos
- ideally, basic "newsletter" (ability for people to get new posts emailed to them) functionality; or an RSS feed that can get hooked up to some kind of email service
- not look like shit out of the box (this rules out, e. g., Blogspot)
Is there a web auth thing I can set up very easily that:
- is like htpasswd-based http basic auth but with a web form and a cookie instead of a browser-invoked dialog box
- is not a huge enterprisey SSO thing, tinier and simpler is better, if it includes the words "oauth" or "saml" it is too enterprisey
- ideally doesn't require changes to the things being authenticated to, would rather it behave like a reverse proxy
- the things being authenticated do not need to know who the user is, only "if a request makes it through to this endpoint, assume there is a valid user"
The problem I am trying to solve here is that I have some personal web-based tools, currently protected by http basic auth, of which I am the only user. But the UX for filling those auth dialogs in with my password manager is trash. I am not willing to switch browsers or password managers to fix it, so this is the only other variable I can play with.
edit: this gets much easier if you don't need it to be a literal reverse proxy; https://nginx.org/en/docs/http/ngx_http_auth_request_module.html is the bit I was looking for but did not know about.
I love newsletters! It's actually my favourite way to stay up-to-date. I'm always looking for more, especially on #tech and the #fediverse or #communication
Who here has some recommendations for me?

Is there a Camera hacking / #ReverseEngineering community (or hashtag) hiding somewhere on Mastodon? For "real" cameras (DSLR / mirrorless)?
The #CHDK and #MagicLantern communities are rather dormant and seem to lack support for devices younger than a decade.
I'm apparently the last survivor of the #SamsungNX community (abandoned by Samsung in 2015), and interested in reversing their ARM firmwares, but my #ARM skills are rather modest.

How do you list/credit a guest editor on a special issue of a magazine?
I usually credit myself as the editor in BLAG, along with my sub-editor, but for the next issue we also have a guest editor.
I can't decide if they 'replace' me, despite me working alongside them on the issue, if my role needs a new name, or if I simply place them above me in the credits.
Please #boost for greater reach, and share your expertise/experience by reply.

#AskFedi: So, there is the whole #Proton thing (which I will not reiterate here).
A bit of an overview of alternatives:
VPN: Mulvad, (...?)
Email: mailbox.org, Posteo, Tuta, (...?)
Passwords: Bitwarden, (...?)
Filestorage: Managed Nextcloud(?), (…?)
Contacts/Calendar: part of mail or files
Especially for the files part, what would you recommend to less technical people (no homelab, no VPS)? Anything else to add?
EDIT: I'm going to use LetsEncrypt, DNS challenge, and then either configure Caddy to use DNS challenge, or switch to another proxy.
This will also work nicely with my VPN, so all's good there.
Thanks all. If you're going to suggest LetsEncrypt DNS challenge, I'm with you. Something else? Love to hear it!
SSL/TLS question for folks.
I run a number of services inside my home network. Since they're all local, I run them without SSL/TLS, so plain http. The problem is modern browsers complain loudly when you use a non-encrypted service.
I can't use LetsEncrypt because the services are local only, not exposed to the Internet.
I could make a self-signed certificate, but that will cause some applications to fail since self-signed certs are generally frowned upon, and I can't easily add my CA certificate to every device in my home.
Do you run a homelab with web services? If so, how do you handle this problem.
I'm looking for #Hebrew speakers who have a background in typesetting/fonts who'd be willing to do me a small favor regarding matching fonts.
If you're such a person, please DM me.
🇨🇵 Who do we know in the Fediverse based in or near #Paris #France and working on #OpenSource strategy, policy, etc.? Bonus points if a funder or if in government of some kind.
#askfedi Do you have any recommendations on content about digital literacy in different languages? From educators to books to websites, drop them below. I'm putting together a directory and working on hopefully creating a centralized library to help technically challenged people on basic digital skills, due to the vast sea of information it is overwhelming for a user to know where to start and who to trust. Specially in South America. (Portuguese, Spanish, English, French, doesn't matter)
What is #bigTech?
I didn't forget to make it a #poll.
Short answers, wrong answers, shitposts, everything is welcome. I'm using your answers. Please boost!
#AskFedi are there any current or former dog groomers here? do you consider it a good job? I was in a pet store the other day and they said they were hiring new dog groomers even if you had no experience. I like being around animals so I'm a little curious...
Gonna do a poll because why not.
If you're a #webdev or webdev #teacher, I need input on what to do next with a first year web development class.
We're working on JS. Just finishing up a simple rock/paper/scissors game to learn about conditionals and flow control & more DOM practice, etc. I need a next project that will push them a little and add some new concepts.
Thanks in advance, boosts appreciated.

Fediverse Queer Reading List
Recently I asked for recommendations for books that featured Queer Romances and were either Young Adult, Science Fiction, or Fantasy. The Fediverse responded with an avalanche of titles, which I have compiled into a neat little list and divided into the following sections:
Fediverse Authors
Authors of Color
Genderqueer Authors
Standalone Stories
Books in a Series
(Library Resources)

Uhhh, I have a strange request. If you own a bread knife with a flat-sided handle in your kitchen, and calipers or something else that will measure to the nearest millimetre or so, and want something to do for 30 seconds, could you tell me how thick the handle is?
Yes, I'd like to collect some random samples of bread knife handle widths. Doesn't matter what brand, what it looks like, how long the blade is or where in the world you are.
I will explain later. Boosts appreciated.
If you can even attempt to pare down a favourite or three release, track, or artist you heard or discovered on RFF this year, let's hear it! Totally cool if you can't declare a fav, just share something awesome you loved from the RFF contributing artists: music, writing, spoken word, live event, all good.
Give us an one liner why it resonated.
Bonus for tagging the artists as a nice motivational boost!

Saw this in my feed https://reasonstobecheerful.world/climate-resilient-coffee/ , and I have a few questions:
Anyone here actually try any coffee from anything other than standard Arabica or Robusta species, for example Liberica, Charrieriana, or Racemosa, or hybrids like the Hibrido de Timor?
Where'd you encounter it?
How'd the experience go?
