Bike commute: I ride with toe clips & street shoes for reasons. All toe-clip pedals are garbage. The latest set started creaking in less than 25m/40km and, like parents with dementia, they're not going to get better with time.
Next thing: really good SPD pedals with decent bearings & clip-in platforms.

Not that it helps you, unless you can find some on line somewhere, but I've a set of Campag quill pedals with clips from the 1980's that have needed nothing except a clean and re-grease every couple of years. Been through quite a few straps and I believe 2 sets of toe clips on the intervening years.
@Guy That's the stuff! Thanks for the reminder. All the vintage pedals I own require cleats, which give me flashbacks of cramming my duck feet into wood-soled Italian canoes.If the SPD+platforms don't work out, I just might seek out some museum pieces.

My partner rides spd one side, flat the other so they can clip in or not. Seems to work for her.........
