@raganwald I’m currently reflecting on the fact that yes, a bicycle is a very efficient form of locomotion — as long as someone paved a road to where you want to go. If you venture into uncharted territory a bicycle is a burden. Not sure where I’m going with this though

@raganwald Continuing the analogy, I would see AI as an e-bike for the mind. It can be a technological augmentation of the human capability. Anyone trying to use an e-bike as a replacement for a human is going to fail spectacularly.

@raganwald No comment on AI, except to say that I'll be very impressed if it ever it comes up with a logo as good as the one you shared with your post. And let's give credit to Clement Mok, the actual human artist who created it.

@raganwald @baldur it’s interesting to me that the response to ‘what does it give you’ is always some form of ‘it’s easier’.

Not ‘better’, not ‘insightful’, or really, any other elevating adjective… just ‘easier’. Which is why it is so appealing to folks. Everyone wants the easy/magic bullet solution to problems that are actually difficult. Get rich quick. Lost weight fast… it’s all the same.

@raganwald @baldur It’s interesting how the current AI boom is being processed among my technically oriented social media world and my non-technical real world friends.

I also think this is in a bubble about to bust cycle. It doesn’t have enough useful applications in business to justify the cost. It can’t be trusted so I don’t see how it actually saves time in any professional context.

But my real world friends love it for just spitballing ideas they just wouldn’t do anything about otherwise. Like we did a small 3-week hockey draft league and the guys had mid journey make team logo ideas and we had cheap helmet stickers made from the ones they liked best. Without the AI tools we just wouldn’t have done logos at all but instead it did help spur some creativity and fun.

Guess that’s the divide. Normal people see it as good at throwaway things. But the danger is if they start thinking it can do more than throwaway.

This exactly, it’s good for highly fault-tolerant tasks and for producing results that can be quickly evaluated.

Thus, it sucks for things where errors may be fatal, or where you can’t fully understand how well its results work right away.

The value problem is finding high-value but also fault-tolerant applications where the work-product can be quickly and easily evaluated.

That’s tough.

Alan Kay said that the original Mac was “The first computer good enough to criticize.”

I’ve always loved that backhanded compliment. It spoke to Kay’s limitless ambition for how computers could and should change humanity. And at an early stage in my career, it inspired me to admire Macintosh, while being very sensitive to how far we still had to go.
