The world is complicated, but I think the great challenge of our time is simple to express:
To learn how our natural life support systems work (our planet and our own bodies), to understand that they are complex and should be treated with respect, and to work with them rather than against them.
@helenczerski I learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, that politicians can make poor decisions even when they have the scientifically-obtained data available, or they select data to support their unscientific view.
With the climate, lobbyists and politicians aim for their preferred outcome, despite the science pointing to a progressive and cheaper way of living.
So I agree. I think critical thinking doesn't stack well against the selfish nature of policy makers and their supporters.

Once I became a regular reader of Science magazine, I realized that I will *never* fully comprehend how everything works. First of all, the scale of interactions is enormous. Second, it is all too complicated. That doesn't mean I stop learning, rather it means I must be humble with my understanding, always.
