@RuthMalan @joeposaurus This is bad when remote but can be a problem even when everybody is in the same room. That's why a good meeting moderator is essential to the process. You need someone who will stand up for everyone on the team to make sure they get heard, and send the ramblers off to formulate their thoughts to prevent wasting time. Unfortunately this need is NOT well recognized.

@RuthMalan @joeposaurus I have very mixed feelings about moderated meetings—I think they often flout Grice’s Maxims—but I think also a lot of what I don’t like about them are when they are badly or too-rigidly moderated

@RuthMalan @joeposaurus this reinforces my gut feeling about why in person meetings suck. I have a habit of interrupting, I much prefer the hand up option of remote meetings.

@iwein @RuthMalan @joeposaurus I believe this so much. So many of the "pandemic shifts" people talk about are just contextual changes that revealed what was already happening but in a way that a bunch of people were really invested in not seeing and then got shocked by

(Not to say there aren't real trends and changes but so much of the convo about remote work misses the real convo about work itself at all)
