I captured this cute Short-eared Owl amidst tall grasses after a successful hunt and while eating sticking his pink tongue out, like he was teasing me.
They migrate to our area, concentrating mainly at the fields of Skagit Valley/ Samish Flats in the state of Washington, hunting at dusk and dawn close to the ground, relying on their acute hearing to find their prey (voles, small birds).
Sometimes it is hard to notice them not just because they're rather smallish, but because the intricate patterns of their feathers blend with the earthy tones of the surroundings, camouflaging well.
